About Yoshi Wada
Yoshi Wada (Yoshimasa Wada) was born in Kyoto in 1943. He graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts in 1967 with a degree in sculpture, and moved to New York City the same year. Following a chance encounter with George Machunas he was welcomed by Fluxus, and was further introduced to composer Lamonte Young, which led him into the experimental music scene in downtown New York. He studied composition with Young, who in turn introduced him to North Indian vocal master Pandit Pran Nath, under whom he studied, and learned classical bagpipe music with bagpipe masters James McIntosh and Nancy Crutcher. Meanwhile, the discovery of Harry Perch opened his eyes to composing music with homemade musical instruments. From the early 70s, he emerged on the scene as an artist active in both composition and instrument creation, advocating ‘sound’ as art from the very beginning. In the early years he experimented with minimalist music using homemade instruments, followed by vocal music, and made his record debut with Lament for the Rise and Fall of the Elephantine Crocodile (1982) featuring vocals and bagpipes. Recognizing sonic possibilities, he further experimented and created Off the Wall (1985), through which he developed a distinct musical style that involves continuously playing dense sounds over an extended period of time to create a lasting, heavy, steady-state sound, and later completed his masterpiece The Appointed Cloud (1987). Defying classical music tradition in every way, he became an important figure at the center of the expanding Western music scene. From the 90s onwards he withdrew from concerts and other traditional forms of musical performance, and instead created multimedia installations and exhibited art in everyday surroundings. He started working with his son Tashi Wada in the 2010s. Died in 2021.
